Originally inhabited by the Ottawa Native Americans, the site of what would become Maumee offered inhabitants the rich resources of the Maumee River Valley. French, British, and Americans slowly took over the Maumee River Valley and throughout the eighteenth century these forces struggled for control of the lower Maumee River. The American victory in the 1794 Battle of Fallen Timber and the conclusion of the War of 1812 allowed for the utilization of the lower Maumee River for transportation. These events lead to the American expansion of the area and the attraction of Easter emigrants who were in search of western fortunes. By 1817, a town was formed at the Foot of the Rapids of the Maumee Rive and within a decade, the settlement had become a major trans-shipment point connecting Lake Erie and the far west. The town continued to grow with the opening of the Wabash and Erie Canal in 1840 and was chosen as the county seat that same year. Maumee derived its name from the Native term meaning “mother”. By 1850, ships primarily used in shipping became too big to navigate up the river and railroad replaced shipping as a faster and cheaper means of transportation. Population continued to grow westward and Maumee soon lost its place as county seat in 1854. There was one final “gas boom” in 1880 that drew more residents, but this was short lived and Maumee’s population continued to dwindle once more. In the 1970’s Maumee experience an economic renaissance and has since grown into one of the largest business centers in Northwest Ohio. Today Maumee ’s neighborhoods retain their small town ambiance and many of the historic homes and buildings of the early residents sill grace the tree lined streets of the architectural districts.
